Progressive Income Taxes

Resolution resolved progressive income taxes are just

The value is justice in that we are argueing whether something is just or not

my criteria will be that of the social contract based on John Lockes second treatese

on goverment

I.

welfare and other social programs that ensure that the basic human

rights are being meet are payed for by progressive income taxes.

According to taxpolicycenter.org the US government makes 45% of its income

through income tax, also according to federalbudget.com the US plans to spend

900 billion dollars on human services. To break this down to percentages the US

government in the month of September 2009 220 billion dollars were brought in

in revenue, 99 billion dollars of that is from income taxes and 66.6 billion dollars of

that is spent on human services that provide basic human needs. We can reasonable

assume that the major source of goverment income will be spent on one of the

government biggest expenses

II.

progressive income taxes are also just in giving each their due because

the rich received all their wealth through interactions with society and

therefore their resources as well as the those of the poor are in debted to

the society.

If you think about it everything you have ever received in your life you have

received because of your interaction with society whether it be good or bad.

Therefore if you have received everthing through society then don’t you owe

everything to society and the opportunity’s they have given you, then should the

society need more or less help from you then shouldn’t you accept the fact that

society is calling back some of its money or resources back then shouldn’t you

willingly give back to society what society has given you.

III.

Under the social contract the rich have agreed to accept current tax

policy’s

According to lockes theory of the social contract when you enter into a society you

give up some of your rights you had in the state of nature, or the state without the

government , when they eneter into a society and benefit from the society. So as

the rich both continue to live and these society’s as well as benefit from the society

then the must apply by the rules of the society, and the same apply’s to the poor. The

current government model for America is democracy, in America the people or at

least the majority of people have choosen to have progressive income taxes through

the democratic process and so to have them removed from the people who have

choosen them would be in and of itself would be unjust to remove the due of the

people their due right to choose what taxes they would like to have implemented.

  1. It sounds like you've researched this topic pretty thoroughly. The format was a little funky in some spots but it probably occured while copying and pasting on the blog site.
