Rhetoric, how big of a role does it play in the gospel? Rhetoric is the use of words effectively to convince influence or persuade others. In my opinion rhetoric plays a big role in our gospel because of how much it has grown to this day. In the beginning the gospel started or was restored to its fullness through the prophet Joseph Smith. The story goes as told that at a young age he was visited by an angel. He was commanded to go to the hill Kamora and recover the gold plates, the teachings of the prophets. Those words alone, for a boy so young must have been so unreal and far fetched that even he could not of comprehended them, however because they were words of an angel it must have influenced him greatly, and so he did as the angel commanded.
A big question for those of us with opinions on the matter is whether rhetoric and the spirit are one in the same, or might they be contradicting forces or ideas. Something that i find very interesting is that we are taught in our gospel that we are converted through the spirit, an overwhelming feeling of happiness and reassurance. Could the spirit be a feeling we receive through rhetoric discussions or is the spirit ''rhetoric'' just being called under another name. Either way many people around the world are being converted to the gospel, non believers are changing their views and opinions and are entering into the sacred covenants of the gospel, therefore rhetoric must play a part in the influencing and convincing of non members of the surety and truth of the gospel.
In our world today science plays a big part in all the facts and truths of life, and because so what science has to say about god and the gospel does have an influence on some people. There is no such thing as ''the spirit'' in science terms, which is why they believe that it is only through the effective and persuasive use of our words that we are able to convince others of what we believe to be true, which is rhetoric. Yet we are taught otherwise, which brings up the idea that maybe rhetoric and the spirit are two separate ideas that work together to certain extents to persuade those who are looking for answers. In the end neither sides can deny the power and influence of the effective usage of words, but also the intense feeling we experience through the gospel.
So in closing my opinion on the matter on whether rhetoric plays a big role in the gospel is yes. when all is said and done the gospel is converting and bringing many unto the lord, whether by effective language or some high power we are all being influenced and persuaded towards an idea.
I love your third paragraph, one reason was because I thought about how the Spirit was probably never intended to be separated from what you're saying, that you should always have the Spirit testifying about what you're saying. In the end it was the clueless speakers who didn't believe in the Spirit that thought rhetoric could stand alone. It also shows how if you take what the world has and add the gospel you get the stronger, better version: rhetoric backed up by the Spirit!
ReplyDeleteA'i, I really enjoyed the first paragraph where you talked about Joseph Smith comprehending the words of the angel. I had never thought about the fact that maybe he didn't understand the things that were said to him the first time. I think that you're right too. If he had understood everything perfectly on the first visit, then why did the Angel Moroni return 3 more times only to repeat the same things? Your writing here shows that you have taken the time to think deeply about the topic, which I would like to thank you for. Thanks for the insightful post.
ReplyDeleteAs your peers said, great post! You did a good job exploring the subject matter, and used effective examples.
