Church Takes Advantage of HRC Petition

I am doing my paper on the speech written by the Church and presented by Michael Otterson in response to the October 12 HRC petition against Boyd K. Packer's conference talk. The audience this article seems to be most obviously directed to is those who are raising their voices against Packer's talk. He says, "While we disagree with the Human Rights Campaign on many fundamentals, we also share some common ground." This suggestion rhetorically connects the Church with the HRC as a desired audience. The bulk of the letter is then a proclamation of the Church's position on gay marriage and, mostly, on its position on how gays should be treated. These facts suggest that the Church is also speaking to a wider audience. At the end, the article reads, "God's universal fatherhood and love charges each of us with an innate and reverent acknowledgement of our shared human dignity." Perhaps the Church has really been directing this to the whole world.

  1. Well-written, good that you used quotes to back up everything you said, I agree, although the article is especially addressing those who took offense to President Packer's words, it is also a sort of declaration the whole world about the stand of the church on this issue. It's amazing how well the church handles itself in these kind of situations, very admirable.

  2. I liked what you had to say, but where was your analysis of your audience. I would suggest that the article is being directed towards members of the church who are offended by the speech, as well as activists who want to legalize homosexual marriage.

  3. Well, I had enough material just about who the church was directing it to to not have to include an analysis of them. I definitely should include an analysis in my actual paper, though, and not go so in-depth with quotes and stuff. Thanks for the compliments and advice! And yea, it is admirable. :)

  4. I would agree that you should put more into your paragraph besides a quote. But, you should use quotes in the actual paper, and plenty of them.
