I, like most intelligent people, enjoy satire. When it comes to Americans I know quite a bit; I am one. This article seems to be a researcher on the outside looking in, directing his comments towards others in the world besides American; ironically The Onion has a large readership in American and they will most likely read it. Those who know Americans, or the stereotypes around them, can chuckle as each new description is brought up. The negatives are summed into somehow endearing traits similar to those of dogs. Unconditional love of dogs somehow makes sense. Who can get mad at a golden retriever just because he tore up the house; he's still is so cute and can roll over and play dead. Likewise, who can get mad at an American just because he is oblivious to cultural nuances; he's still so self confident and can shout nonsense and play simpleminded.
I am the audience, you are the audience, Obama is the audience; basically anyone with a computer, a sense of humor, and intelligence is the audience. Hitler, however, would not count, he is dead. Along with the previous stipulation maturity is a requirement, because of the nature of The Onion young readers either should not or would not get some of the intricacies of the satire. Although, having millions of readers, who can stop the curious high school kid or the debate team? The audience is anyone who can appreciate the humor; who sees its truth but can laugh thoughtfully.
